CosmeticsDesign editors Cassandra Stern, Amanda Lim and Kirsty Doolan join forces in Paris to incosmetics global 2024To gain an international perspective on the outstanding sustainability-related launches they have witnessed.
The top three sustainability ingredients selected at the show are:
Cassandra Stern, Editor CosmeticsDesign USA: Upcycled Beauty Company with Upcycled Spent Grain Leftovers
US editor Stern was impressed by an upcycled beauty company that turns spent grains leftover from its barley tonic into an active ingredient to balance irritated skin. The UK-based company works with local breweries, but also with similar companies in Quebec, Canada.
“I think it’s a really interesting way to get creative with upcycling,” she says. “And I also think it’s really great that they’re expanding on this concept.”
Amanda Lim, Editor Cosmetic Design Asia: Laboratoires Expanscience GAÏALINE
Lim chose French company Laboratoires Expanscience and its new ingredient GAÏALINE. The flaxseed-based actives are created using completely wild-grown flaxseed crops, and the company works with local partners who practice conservative farming.
“They’re just letting the crops go wild,” she explains. “No plowing, no soil destruction, no soil disturbance, and crop rotation is facilitated.
“It’s very simple,” Lim says. “But I wanted to highlight this because I think it shows that we don’t need to do anything special near Earth.”
Kirsty Doolan, Cosmetic Design Europe Editor: Roquette Beauté ST730
Mr. Doolan also highlighted French company Roquette Beauté, which has just launched ST730 hydroxypropyl starch, a biodegradable pea-based water-resistant film former with lifting effects.
This circular ingredient is based on yellow peas, and in water resistance clinical trials, it demonstrated better water resistance than various other ingredients traditionally used in cosmetics. “There is talk of using it in the formulation of color cosmetics, but it also has skin-tightening effects, making it ideal for hybrid skincare and makeup products,” she says.
