Checking In: Dance Team Life

Well, I think I’m finally starting to get the hang of this dance team competition!

Here’s what to expect:

  • When it’s time for the little ladies to dance, it’s a long day of lots of sitting and waiting with short activities.
  • Carry plenty of snacks, especially snacks with protein for moms.
  • We have compiled a list of costume details. It involves spreadsheets and screenshots.
  • If you’re staying longer than 6 hours, research where to eat.
  • Check parking conditions before you arrive.
  • Practice your hairstyle in advance.
  • You may have to sprint from the stage to the dressing room, so make sure you have comfortable shoes that you can run in. Quick changes are no joke.

If she’s going long-term, she thinks she’ll eventually bring camping gear with her. I’m serious! At the last convention, I saw a pop-up changing tent and a few lightweight travel chairs and thought, “That mom is a genius.”

The girls did a really good job! They performed two of her dances and received high rankings: gold in tap and platinum in hip hop. (I was told this was a good thing.)

Let me just say, this is a journey to see Conor evolve as a dancer. Her confidence seems to increase as she progresses through her routine and I think her teachers have noticed this as well.

My hope is that she keeps doing it for a while because she seems to make dancing feel special outside of school. I grew up in a strict household where grades were the barometer of a person’s worth, so school was the only thing that mattered to me. The only activities outside of school that I was allowed to do were quiet ones that I thought would help me learn more, like playing the piano. Don’t worry if you don’t like it! Dancing and sports were generally seen as something that got in the way of studying.

I don’t think that’s actually the case. Activities outside of school teach you life skills that will help you in the future, such as discipline, how to work in a team, how to express yourself and process your emotions, how to deal with disagreements with others, and how to manage expectations. I think you can tell me.

Anyway, I’m glad you still like Connor!

Oh, so this post is about makeup and she still absolutely refuses to put eyeshadow on me, sigh.

She likes bright pink cheeks and red lipstick. 🙂
