Think Dirty has been around for quite some time and has grown significantly since I first wrote this article in 2015.
The mobile app was launched in summer 2013 and features over 68,300 products. According to the website, Think Dirty currently has 9.54 brand ratings, 2.5 product submissions, and 26.2 unique scans. Not to mention his 5.62 “dirty thinkers” who love this app.

What is sink dirty?
think dirty is an app that helps consumers evaluate the health and safety of beauty products, personal care products, and household products.
Think Dirty evaluates products based on the ingredients listed on the packaging itself or through websites such as nonprofit websites and government agencies.

Lily Tse, founder and CEO of Think Dirty, is leading a movement to literally take back control of beauty products. Please think seriously. The more this app grows, the less skincare and makeup companies will be able to continue labeling their products as “natural” even when they contain harmful ingredients. The more people boycott toxic products, the more truly safe products will become available. We must do our part to let the beauty industry know that harmful ingredients are no longer acceptable.
Think Dirty not only rates products based on ingredient research, but also allows users to leave reviews on products. Think Dirty users can create their own profile where they can save their favorite products for others to consider.

Why clean skin care should be a priority:
- There are 80,000 synthetic chemicals that have not been adequately tested (Source: Natural Resources Defense Council). In the United States, the cosmetics industry investigates only 11 percent of the 10,500 cosmetic ingredients cataloged by the FDA (FDA 2000).
- Only 11 chemicals are banned in the United States. The United States has incredibly lagging safety standards compared to other countries. Canada has guidelines for more than 650 chemicals, and the European Union Health Commission has restricted more than 1,300 chemicals.
- When it comes to cosmetics, there are outdated government regulations that haven’t been updated since 1930. The Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2013 has finally been introduced and is awaiting a vote. However, there are no premarket approval requirements for cosmetics to be sold in the U.S. and Canadian markets.
- There is no legal definition of “natural” and “organic.” The use of words like “natural” and “organic” in cosmetics and personal care products is open to anyone without proper evidence.
- Fragrances are considered trade secrets and do not need to be listed on products. Manufacturers are not required to list fragrance ingredients on product labels. Instead, the general term “parfum” is listed to describe a mixture of potentially dozens of chemicals.

We evaluate the overall risk of a given product based on the published potential health effects of its ingredients. Each ingredient listed on the product label or on the manufacturer’s website is evaluated for documented evidence. Carcinogenicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity and/or Allergenicity and immunotoxicityas shown in the table below.
The evaluation is performed by Think Dirty’s founders and advisory board. All have extensive experience in related fields such as medicine, biochemistry, biology, physiology, environmental toxicology, environmental health and safety, and chemical engineering, and have a track record of collaboration with Health Canada. , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency, Environment Canada, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and other relevant government and non-profit agencies.
One thing to know is that Think Dirty automatically rates products containing fragrances a 9 or higher. Fragrances are one of the most toxic ingredients. Although some fragrances are naturally derived, it is difficult to distinguish between different types of fragrances.

How to use the Think Dirty app:
I pay $2.99 per month think dirty. I’m not one to pay for apps, but I found this app incredibly useful. There is also a free version, but I found it completely useless.
Let me be clear: I have two daughters who are old enough to wear makeup and need skin care, so I have strayed far from my skin care values. I bought some makeup items for convenience and price range, hoping they weren’t too toxic. I found some to be okay and two to be very bad choices.
First, I added all my products to my profile (bathroom shelf, as the app calls it) using the search bar at the top of the homepage or using the barcode feature. I was able to check the reputation and ingredients. We were also able to see the individual ingredients and the potential risks of the listed ingredients.
Once they identified the “dirty” products, they could again use the search function to find safer alternatives. For example, I typed “blush” into the search. I then used “Sort and Filter” to only display items with scores between 0 and 3. Please note that if a product has a rating of 0, it likely has been uploaded to the app but no ingredients have been added. Click on a product to see a quick list of ingredients. If there are 0 or 1 ingredients, it was not uploaded correctly to the app. In this case, go ahead and find the item. When you find a promising product, you can actually press the “SHOP” button at the bottom of the product to go directly to the website (often Amazon if there is no website) and purchase the product on the spot.
Within minutes, I was able to find cleaner options that were perfect for me and my daughter’s makeup and skincare items. Not to mention, you can also find product reviews to help you consider the product.
I also use the app when researching brands at retailers like Target, Ulta, and Sephora. Product barcode feature allows you to quickly find the score of a specific product before purchasing.
