In 15th century France, grave robbers would sneak into cemeteries and steal from people who had died of the bubonic plague or who had already passed away. It is said that they protected themselves by making a special combination of cloves, rosemary, lemon, cinnamon, and eucalyptus. Legend has it that the thieves received lighter punishment as long as they revealed the recipe to prevent the plague.

How much money can you save by making your own Thief Blend?

These calculations are based on plant therapy essential oil prices.

  • Clove Bud: $9.99 = $1 per ml
  • Cinnamon Cassia: $8.99 = 0.90 per 1 ml
  • Eucalyptus Globulus $7.99 = 0.80/ml
  • Lemon: $8.99 = 0.90 per ml
  • Rosemary: $11.49 = $1.15 per ml

Total cost for all five oils is $47.45.

When converting drops to ml, each bottle of Plant Therapy essential oils is 10ml, so I looked into how much that amount would be.

  • Cloves: 4.5 ml x $1 per ml = $4.50
  • Cinnamon: 2.25 ml x 0.90 per 1 ml = $2.03
  • Eucalyptus: 1.7 ml x 0.80 per ml = $1.36
  • Lemon: 3.95 ml x 0.90 per 1 ml = $3.56
  • Rosemary: 1.15 ml x 1.15/ml = $1.32

The total is $12.77 per bottle for 13.5 ml of Homemade Thieves Blend. Young Living Thief Blend costs $51.64 per 15ml.

Plant Therapy’s Germ Fighter is $12.99 per 10ml.

If you don’t buy Thieves Blend from Young Living, the savings won’t be as great, but having the recipe and oil on hand will come in handy in a pinch.

Where to get the best essential oils:

I get my favorite essential oils from either mountain rose herb Or phytotherapy. Both use great quality essential oils. Plant Therapy is a little cheaper, with no minimum price and free shipping. Thief Oil uses and potential benefits:

  • Make a multi-purpose spray by adding 80 drops to an 8-ounce spray bottle with 1 tbsp. Add witch hazel or vodka and add water. You can spray this on any surface. I spray it all over my bed, sheets, room, and car. I had no problems spraying this on my upholstery.
  • Make a hand sanitizer spray by combining 1/2 Thieves blend and 1/2 vodka in a small spray bottle like this: this.
  • Use 1/4 cup olive oil and 20 drops of sheaf oil to make pre-diluted sheaf oil and use it as a therapeutic massage oil for cold and flu relief and mild aches and pains.
  • Make a homemade ointment using 1/4 cup coconut oil and 1 tablespoon. 20 drops of beeswax and thief oil. You can use it directly when your throat, neck, or chest hurts. You can also apply it to the soles of your feet. It not only delivers oil into the body, but also smoothes and moisturizes dry heels. If it is still too strong, you should test it on children. My daughters handle this proportion easily. This thief oil recipe also helps soothe insect bites.
  • Add 80 drops to 8 ounces of white vinegar for a powerful surface cleaner. Spray not only windows and mirrors, but also the entire counter to disinfect and clean! Don’t forget that phone!
  • Add 4-5 drops to your laundry for a deeper wash.
  • Add a drop to your toothpaste and this blend will do wonders for your gums and teeth health. I would like to add this to my homemade toothpaste recipe.
  • Spread it! I always diffuse the DIY Thieves blend. It smells great and gives me a sense of security.

If you have never smelled this blend, you will be amazed at how wonderful it smells. The scent of cinnamon and cloves is very prominent. The eucalyptus and rosemary menthol scent is grounding and woody, and the lemon brightens everything up. It’s the perfect scent for your fall/winter home! These are my 5 favorite essential oils!

I’m so excited to share this DIY Thieves oil recipe with you!
