“I grew up in Brooklyn and decided at the age of six that I wanted to be a professional tennis player. Then a year later I decided I wanted to be a Grand Slam champion, probably inspired by watching Serena Williams on TV. I ended up getting a full scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, playing tennis for the Badgers. But at the end of college, I realized I had a creative side. I also wanted to go back to New York.

Of course I needed to make money, so I started working in sales. In fact, I was pretty good at it, but it wasn’t fun or creative. It was just another competitive area for me. I’ve always been like that. After that, I went into marketing thinking I would come up with all these crazy ideas, but it was so boring that I quit that too.
I was a sports broadcaster in college and missed video so I became a video producer for a humor media company aimed at millennials. Although she didn’t get paid much, she at least found something that brought her joy. I don’t want to be that girl who always tells everyone to break up with their boyfriends and quit their jobs, but her life is so short and there are no rules. I ended up working with a lot of comedians in that job and realized that they were the same type of people as me. I wasn’t thinking about doing stand-up at that point, but being a comedian is just a breath of fresh air, very self-conscious and self-deprecating, but also a driving force. I felt like I had finally found my community.
