How have your fragrance preferences shifted in the last five years?

Surprisingly, not much has changed! I’m still not into heavy florals or sweet florals. To work with floral notes, you should brighten and lift them with bold citrus notes, or use them as accents for something dark/dirty or gourmet. I still struggle with the patchouli (on my skin, even a light patchouli scent drowns out everything else in the blend). And I still love dark scents in the winter, centered around oud, amber, vanilla, and musk. Light, “sparkling” scents such as citrus, cedar, and pink pepper are recommended for hot, humid weather.

One change (more of a discovery than a change) is that I now have a strong preference for fragrances that give a sense of “coldness.” Something with a cold, almost metallic vibe, like Zadig et Voltaire’s “This Is Her,” or something with a citrusy scent. For example, instead of warming with spices, balance them with cool notes. I’d love to try some icier, more minty scents in the next few years (I’m in no rush, I’m enjoying what I have!).
