An interview with Shakira from Kira Cosmetics
How did you come to love makeup?
Admittedly, I didn’t start wearing makeup until I was in my late teens.
What inspired you to start the brand Kira Cosmetics?
I’ve been interested in starting my own business since I was 20 years old. My best friend started selling Avon, so I joined him. Shortly after, I worked as a salesman for Rodan and Fields, but in 2019, I got ill and my world changed dramatically. After spending four months in hospital, I decided to start my own company.
There is a huge need in the beauty industry for brands to develop products and tools that are easy to use for people with mobility issues – is your brand looking to expand into developing these products?
Oh yeah! I definitely have plans to create tools and products for people with mobility issues. I have a mobility issue myself, so I’m super excited to add that to the beauty space.
What inspired you to make your brand cruelty-free?
I have so much respect for all life and I don’t believe in harming little furry creatures.
Why did you choose the luxury market?
I love the glitz and glamour of high fashion – the luxury industry – and I wanted to be a part of that lifestyle, so I decided to join a luxury brand.
Kira Cosmetics’ product packaging is so lovely! Can the products be refilled?
It’s not refillable at the moment, but it will be in the future. We are looking to create more eco-friendly products. I like the refillable concept.
What are your thoughts on sustainability in makeup?
This is a really great question. Currently I am looking for more eco-friendly product options like highlighters and also using honeycomb packaging for the boxes to keep the products from breaking down. Sustainability is very important for our environment and also for the oceans.
How environmentally friendly are your products?
The recently launched highlighter pens are recyclable.
Where do you find inspiration?
I get inspired by colour everywhere, but I especially love Pinterest and Instagram – I like to create mood boards of colour schemes and use them as reference when creating new things.
Do you have a Kira Cosmetics muse?
Can I just say my muse is Paris Hilton? LOL, I love her aesthetic.
What is your favorite type of product to create and why are you drawn to it over all other types of makeup?
It’s definitely the brushes! Brushes are very important for a makeup routine. Making brushes is something special. It’s easy to create an image in your head, but applying makeup requires more focus and attention.
Is there a color that you think would look good on everyone?
Hmm, it’s definitely a nice blue-toned red lipstick. I think this shade will look good on a wide range of skin tones.
What is your favorite product that you have created for Kira Cosmetics so far?
My powder and glitter brushes. These are my best sellers too.
What’s your favorite beauty trend?
My favorite beauty trend last year was latte makeup – I love warm bronze makeup.
What are your best eyeshadow tips and tricks?
I have single eyelids, and I think you used to have single eyelids too. You wrote a book about single eyelids, didn’t you? What I often do is create a crease on top of my normal crease to make my eyes look bigger.

Do you have a favourite scent?
Right now I’m obsessed with Good Girl Blush by Carolina Herrera. As readers may be aware, I will also be launching a fragrance line soon and am very excited to share with you all what I’m creating when the time is right.
What is your skincare routine?
In the morning shower Tatcha Deep Cleanse Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser I use it on my face. When I get out of the shower Too Face Plump & Prime SerumNext, apply eye cream. Drunk Elephant C-Tango Vitamin C Eye Creamlastly Drunk Elephant Proteini Polypeptide Firming Moisturizer.
Do you have pets?
Unfortunately I can’t because I’m allergic to cats and dogs.
What are your top 5 musicians you listen to or your favorite genre of music?
I love pop, rock and jazz music.
What do you do to pamper yourself?
I love being pampered, I love facials, manicures and pedicures, and who doesn’t love a little shopping?
