Q&A:

What made you decide to pursue a career in the beauty industry?

I have always had a passion for the beauty industry. I have been interested in hair, nails, and skin care since I was little. As a teenager, when I wanted to attend cosmetology school, others discouraged me from doing so. While I was in college, I took a part-time job at Sephora because I loved working with and helping other women. From there, I began praying to God to help me find a career in the beauty industry that I could do on my own. A year later, I took a caning course and from there my dream finally came true.

Can you share a memorable moment from your early days in the industry?

There were some memorable moments when I first started in the industry. The most memorable moment for me was when I made a mobile appointment and visited a client’s home. I had a client who was a sweet older woman who lived an hour away. She always played the Isley Brothers and she always prepared dinner for me. She didn’t have to do that for me, but I appreciated the gesture, it was showing her appreciation. I am very grateful for the many relationships I have built over the years.

How do you define your brand in the beauty space?

Karli Beauty believes in enhancing your natural features without completely changing them. Our clients are already beautiful, so we provide enhancements and help them feel more confident. We also place great importance on providing a safe and comfortable environment so that our customers can trust us and build long-term relationships with us.

What does it mean to you to be featured in the Hype Hair Magazine x Bronner Bros collaboration?

This feature is very special to me. Being a young black woman in business is not easy. I’m from a small town in South Carolina. But I grew up visiting Atlanta. When I think of Bronner, I think of the best people in Atlanta and the beauty industry. Regarding Hype Hair Magazine, many of the women I admire are featured in this magazine. I’m honored to be featured. Incredibly, as lash artists we are often ignored compared to hair stylists and nail technicians, yet we shape beauty just as much.

Where do you see your career going five years from now?

Five years from now, I see myself helping beauty entrepreneurs throughout their journey. I want to help them open their own boutique or salon store. We look forward to providing them with all the guidance and tools they need to get started.

Who is your biggest influence in the beauty industry?

My biggest influences in the beauty industry are Sierra from Glam Shop and Styles by Nuk. These two are amazing at what they do and I always respect them and their work.

What is your specialty that distinguishes you from other experts in your field?

Working at Sephora and attending esthetician school taught me the importance of product education. At My Lash Bar, we are known for educating our clients on each of our services to help them achieve their look without compromising their natural features. I also have a passion for helping others, love working with students, and my team members challenge me to be better.

How important is diversity and inclusion in the beauty industry and how do you contribute to it?

Diversity is important in the beauty industry. Because we don’t all look the same and the services we provide will be different and specifically tailored to each individual. We believe that representation is essential in every industry. My contribution to the beauty industry would be to primarily employ minorities for my business.

Do you have any advice for beauty professionals who want to make a mark for themselves?

My advice is to be yourself. You don’t necessarily have to follow trends. If you keep learning and becoming the best version of yourself, your tribe will find you.

What role does innovation play in your approach to beauty and hair care?

Eyelash extension technology is evolving every day. We are grateful that new products come to market that allow us beauty professionals to shorten the time we receive services.

How do you balance staying true to your style while keeping up with industry trends?

I continue to use my insight and listen to my clients. If a client wants to try something new, I’m willing to learn as long as it doesn’t cause any harm to the client.

What upcoming projects or collaborations can your fans and readers look forward to?

One of the upcoming projects that my fans and readers are looking forward to from me is releasing my e-book on salon ownership this year.

What is your favorite beauty hack or product you can’t live without?

My KB Lash Glue is my favorite service product. The adhesive is oil and water resistant. Used by many lash artists across the United States for superior lash retention. Available at Karlibeautylashbar.com.
