SmartSKN has announced the Muilli AI Dermascope, a portable diagnostic device that combines artificial intelligence and advanced imaging technology to provide accurate skin analysis. The launch of this device introduces a new standard for hyper-personalized skin care and has the potential to transform product development for cosmetics and personal care manufacturers.
According to SmartSKN, Muilli is designed for both consumer and professional use and boasts 98.3% accuracy in assessing key skin parameters such as pigmentation, wrinkles, redness, and sensitivity.
“Muilli AI Dermascope was inspired by the need to make skin care personal and accessible,” Val Neicu, CEO and co-founder of SmartSKN, told CosmeticsDesign. “Skin health is deeply tied to self-confidence. We wanted to create a tool that would help people understand their skin without having to visit a clinic or rely on bulky, expensive devices.”
Leverage AI to increase accuracy
Muilli’s features are the result of years of research and collaboration with LILLYCOVER Korea. LILLYCOVER Korea’s AI-driven skin analysis technology is at the core of the device. Muilli uses a database of over 150,000 global skin profiles to ensure consistent diagnosis across a variety of conditions.
“Our proprietary algorithms compare real-time images with benchmark data and analyze parameters such as wrinkles and redness,” Neicu explained. “Metrics like mIoU (mean integral of the union) help us achieve extraordinary precision.” This ensures that Muilli provides actionable insights for truly personalized skincare regimens. I will.
The device also considers various environmental factors. “We use advanced image processing to standardize diagnostic conditions such as lighting and skin contact,” Neicu said. “This ensures consistent results whether you use it in a well-lit gym or in a dimly lit bedroom.”
Unlike traditional diagnostics that classify skin into simple categories such as dry or oily, Muilli’s AI assigns users to one of 40 unique profiles. This detailed analysis enables the creation of highly personalized formulations through SmartSKN’s K-AI product line.
“Muilli’s AI continuously learns from an extensive database that has been meticulously categorized by dermatologists,” Neicu explained. “By analyzing diverse skin types, tones, and conditions from regions such as South Korea, the United States, and Japan, we create accurate metrics for indicators such as redness, pores, and wrinkles.”
Personalization and creation
The data collected by Muilli powers SmartSKN’s K-AI products, which are customized to meet individual needs through a modular formulation approach.
“Once Muilli completes the analysis, the data is converted into a personalized prescription using our proprietary algorithms,” said Neicu. “Each K-AI product starts with one of our base formulas, to which oils and active ingredients are added at varying levels.” As a result, “this modular approach maintains consistency and safety.” while enabling over 25,000 unique formulations,” she explained.
SmartSKN ensures consistency and safety through rigorous testing and sustainable practices. “Our robots precisely measure and mix materials to exact specifications, minimizing human error,” says Neicu. “Each formulation undergoes rigorous testing for stability and efficacy,” she added, “and we only use EWG-verified ingredients to prioritize safety.”
This approach responds to growing consumer demand for sustainable products. “On-demand production minimizes waste by eliminating excess inventory,” she explained. “Personalized products are more likely to be well-used by consumers, eliminating the waste of trial and error.”
Address industry challenges
SmartSKN faced challenges bringing the Muilli AI dermascope to market, especially in an industry dominated by standardized products. “One of the big challenges was introducing the concept of personalization to an industry focused on one-size-fits-all products,” said Neicu.
She added that the company also needs to ensure that “Muilli remains compact and affordable without compromising professional precision.”
The final design of the device will be versatile for both consumers and professionals. “Its portability and affordability replace bulky and expensive equipment without sacrificing professional accuracy,” said Neicu.
Expanding access and retail innovation
SmartSKN plans to expand its accessibility by working with spas, clinics, and skin care professionals to introduce the SmartSKN PRO channel. The retail expansion includes the launch of the SmartSKN minilab, where consumers can watch personalized products being created in real-time.
“The journey begins with a simple skin analysis using the Muilli AI dermascope connected to the SmartSKN app,” Neicu explained. “Users receive detailed skin health reports and personalized prescriptions within minutes.”
He continued, “Their custom products are formulated on-demand, manufactured in real-time by our robots, and delivered directly to your home or select retail stores.”
The first minilab will open in Los Angeles in January 2025, with additional locations planned in New York City and Las Vegas.
Impact on the industry
SmartSKN’s Muilli AI Dermascope provides significant opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers by bridging the gap between diagnostic tools and product personalization. Highly personalized solutions based on real-time skin analysis could lead to more targeted product development, reduced waste, and increased consumer satisfaction.
“We don’t just make products; we build an ecosystem that combines cutting-edge technology, on-demand manufacturing, and personalized care,” Neicu concluded. .
