A big storm is heading towards Norcal today! The weather goddess says that you will see an atmospheric river. Good morning.

Well, there’s no way I’d wear this Madewell Harlow wide pants When it’s a downpour (imagine how wet the bottom part gets, dude), yeah, this is what I wore to work yesterday when it was still dry.

Anyway, I’ve seen a lot of people wearing this wide-leg style pants, and I didn’t realize this until I tried on this particular cut, but this voluminous pant immediately appealed to me. It seems very wrong and you have to make very strategic choices when wearing it. Otherwise, I look like I’m drowning in fabric or like a kid playing dress up with someone’s adult clothes.

Here are some styling tips that are very helpful to me as a petite person. Maybe it will help you too.

1. Pair the pants with a top of the same color for a monochrome look

This type of tailored wide-leg pants tend to have a higher rise, and I find that if you wear a contrasting color with your top, it will appear shorter because there is a visual break between the top and the pants. Ta.

Wearing one continuous color creates a long, unbroken line from top to bottom, making your body look longer, making you look taller without looking like you’re swimming in your pants.

2. Choose shoes with platforms or thick soles.

For some reason, pairing wide-legged pants with platform shoes creates a balanced look. I think if you wear very wide pants, the more delicate contours of your shoes will get buried in the fabric.

You could also make chunky sole loafers or something similar to what I’m wearing here. Platform version of Chuck Taylor All Stars. I really like the pop of white on the bottom. I think it adds a little freshness to the overall impression.

3. Wear fitted tops and slim-fitting blazers or jackets

I think these pants look great with a bodysuit or slim fit blazer. I’m wearing an old J. Crew bodysuit that I bought a few years ago. Chambray blazer recently purchased from J.Crew factory. Side note: I feel like J. Crew and J. Crew Factory jackets and blazers tend to run a little small.

Just for fun, I tried the same top and pants. Madewell oversized boyfriend cut blazer. I feel like this is a very specific style in itself, but with my petite frame, it’s difficult to pull off. I feel like I’m wearing my grandpa’s jacket or something. lol!

Don’t get me wrong. I love this blazer and wear it all the time. I think it looks better with tight-fitting jeans. I wore it with the Madwell Vintage Jean a few weeks ago and it looked very balanced.

If you are in Norcal today, please stay safe. That must be crazy.

Karen
