Last weekend, New York achieved a historic victory as the New York Liberty won the WNBA Championship title against the Minnesota Lynx. This marked Liberty’s first championship win and ended a decades-long drought at the top of citywide basketball. New York celebrated with a huge parade Thursday, but Liberty power forward Brianna Stewart got the best seat in town ( Ellieperhaps). Below, she recalls her parade experience at ITG. I’ve been feeling a wonderful, almost euphoric feeling since the New York Liberty won their first-ever WNBA Championship. It’s hard to compare, but when I won the championship with the Seattle Storm, they had already won it twice, so being part of the team that brought New York its first basketball championship in 51 years… It’s insane to be able to do that. Everyone really wanted it. That’s why I came to New York to help bring something different to this franchise. It was everything I could have imagined. The victories, the parades, the celebrations, everything was enthusiastic.
To be honest, we’ve been partying every day since we won on Sunday. I can’t sleep here. And the day before we celebrated with a parade, we departed with the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Puma also appeared. We had a mimosa brunch beforehand and then went on a float with my wife, kids, grandparents, and aunt. I was so happy they were there because I wanted them to know how special this moment was. It literally felt like a movie. Fans lined up block by block with all kinds of merchandise, including vintage items. I was able to get off the float and high-five them. There were construction workers there so I was able to sign their helmets. I’m glad I was able to do that because I wanted my fans to feel how much I appreciate them.
I wanted to play all the New York songs on the float. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys were on the playlist, but I also mixed in a little Meek Mill because I love him. I drank a lot, smoked, high-fived, screamed, sang, and tried to interact with as many people as possible. At one point, they were even throwing candy into the audience.
That night, we continued our celebration at Barclays Center. It was like a club. The stadium was full and no basketball was being played. People would die for its attendance. We really wanted this championship as a team, but we also wanted it for the fans. New York continues to appear before us, no matter what borough we are in or what time it is. This city is unlike any other. And we brought it back.
