In an exciting development for the cosmetics industry, Potion AI debuted last year as the first free artificial intelligence tool designed specifically for cosmetic formulators. As featured in last month’s In-Cos Global Top 3 Startups article, we selected his Potion AI as a featured innovator. Following this profile, we caught up with co-founders Hejab Malik and Yahya Syed to discuss the inspiration, functionality, and future of Potion AI.

The origins of potion AI

Potion AI was founded in technology after its co-founders recognized a major gap in the industry: the lack of accessible, advanced technical tools to help develop safe, effective, and innovative products. Born from a shared passion for both beauty and beauty.

Malik explained that the platform started after she and her co-founder sought to launch their own skincare brand. They used a proprietary AI algorithm to generate the brand’s formula. When we took our formulations to a cosmetic chemist to manufacture our products, he advised us that automating the workflow behind formulation could have an even bigger impact on the industry. Malik and Saeed heeded his advice and invested further in the technology, bringing Potion AI to market last year.

How potion AI works

At its core, Potion AI leverages machine learning algorithms to analyze vast data sets on ingredient properties, safety profiles, and past formulation successes and failures. As detailed on the company’s website, the platform’s AI-enabled search functionality gives formulators the opportunity to find the best ingredients faster “by searching your way through natural language thoughts.” Formulators can also reverse engineer their formulas by inputting INCI listings, after which the Potion AI platform will “find matching ingredients and blends from our database,” the largest index of product names on the market, the company’s website details.
