Angela Laverne Brown, known worldwide as Angie Stone, was more than just a singer. She was a soulful force that left an indelible mark in the trail blazer, storyteller, and music industry. Born December 18, 1961 in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s journey from gospel roots to global stardom is a testament to her unparalleled talent, resilience and influence.
Stone’s career began in the late 1970s as a member of Sequence, one of hip-hop’s pioneering female trio. The 1979 hit “Funk You Up” became the second rap record released by a group of women, paving the way for women in the male-dominated genre.
By the 1990s, Stone had moved to R&B, becoming the lead vocalist of vertical holds, providing hits such as “Sike You Swouy Too Busy.” However, it was her solo career that solidified her position as a musical powerhouse.
In 1999, Stone released his debut solo album, Black Diamond, featuring the breakout hit “No More Rain.” The album featured her signature mix of soulful vocals, Heartfelt’s lyricism and raw emotion, and won her critical acclaim.

Beyond music, Stone performed acting chops on film, television and even Broadway. Whether on stage or on screen, she brought the same passion and credibility that defined music. Her influence has spread beyond entertainment. She was a beacon of mentoring, inspiration and empowering artists navigating the industry.
