To me, jeans are like the clothing version of foundation in makeup. A perfect number is n+1 – You know? In my defense, not only are these things I wear 95% of the time, they’re also timeless. Even if a style is out of fashion now, it will always come back. So I’ve grown quite a collection over the years. And today I thought I’d collate all my discoveries here, from the styles I appreciate the most (and some helpful sizing information) to my top tips about it. To buy denim…

my top denim tips

Measure. Most denim is sold by waist measurement (usually in inches). So after years of foolishly guessing my size and hoping for the best, I’ve found that measuring my waist with a measuring tape can save me from endless returns. Relax your stomach and measure the narrowest part of your waist to get your size. Most retailers also have a size guide, so refer to it and take note of any fit considerations. If you have any shoes that I wore and you’re interested, I’ve actually added all my size and fit details here (After signing in).

try it. It may seem obvious, but please give it a try. This is why I personally prefer internet shopping for denim. Because you can try on denim from the comfort of your home and see how it works with other items in your wardrobe and with different types of shoes. You can really get the right feel for them. Don’t rush and don’t remove the tag until it’s 100% (I made that mistake many times). We also recommend trying on clothes at different times of the day to accommodate your body’s changes from morning to afternoon. You don’t want anything too tight, but denim naturally stretches, so keep this in mind and think carefully about what type of fit you’re looking for.

composition. Get used to checking the composition of your clothes. It’s always listed on websites and clothing labels, and can be very helpful in getting exactly what you want. If the stretchiness of denim is a non-negotiable for you, look for one that contains elastane, even in small amounts. The higher the percentage of elastane, the more stretchable it is. If you prefer a more rigid, vintage feel, look for 100% cotton styles.

Aftercare. It is best to wash denim inside out in the washing machine at 30°C or below. Never tumble dry. I always hang them in the dryer to dry. If you can avoid washing, do it. This is not a garment that needs to be washed frequently.Sometimes I just give them a spritz blackhorse lane atelier denim spray* Return to hanger. I like to hang them from the waistband of a pants hanger. This is because they all look the same when folded, making it easy to find different styles. You can also inflate it between uses.

The straight-leg style is the style of the moment, looks great with any shoe, has a 90’s minimalist vibe, and I can see why, as you can wear it a little looser or a little tighter depending on your wishes.
