GymnospermsA traditional medicine from the Mexican state of Puebla, known as popote or tezozotla, helps treat rashes, acne, and diarrhea.proven in previous research G. glutinosumContains flavonoids, diterpenes, and essential oils.
“Based on these ethnobotanical studies, this plant growing in the wild appears to contain promising active compounds,” the authors write. “If appropriate procedures for extraction are carried out, it could potentially provide a source of high value-added natural antioxidant ingredients.” Potential applications in cosmetic and dermatological formulations are high.
“In recent years, various studies have been conducted to incorporate plant and herbal extracts into the market as skin care products for therapeutic potential.”

This study utilized a rapid protocol to extract and isolate aboveground components. G. glutinosum, collected in the village of Tehuacan, Puebla state, in both June and December. They were collected twice in case there were differences in phytochemicals depending on the time of year.
The process included maceration followed by extraction with chloroform and methanol. Analysis including gas chromatography mass spectrometry.
Chloroform extraction revealed the presence of α-bisabolol (BIS), a sesquiterpene alcohol with antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and other biological activities. Currently, BIS is primarily obtained from chamomile, so the authors write, “Finding new natural sources of bisabolol is essential for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic specialty industries.”
BIS is used to treat atopic dermatitis, helping irritated skin and reducing itching. It has also been reported to improve skin hydration, brightness, oiliness, and facial texture.
In addition to BIS, the authors also discovered six methoxylated flavones and a group of hydroxy fatty acids. Methoxylated flavones have previously been demonstrated to have antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. According to the authors, these flavones contribute to medicinal properties and are therefore used in traditional medicine of the region.
Methoxylated flavones contain antioxidant molecules, can fight free radicals, and when combined with BIS can improve biological activity, “as a result of which they are introduced into cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and therapeutic formulations.” potentially used as an extract,” the authors wrote.
“For those with a quick, economical and efficient extraction process, this extract offers a series of biocompounds with useful photoprotective, moisturizing, and whitening properties, making it worthy of further research as an ingredient for cosmetic purposes. You may be eligible.”
