The parents-to-be are set to marry and welcome their first child together soon after officially rekindling their romance in 2023. The Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum singer, songwriter and actress opened up about her first pregnancy with Entertainment Tonight after announcing her engagement to Nelly.
“I never in a million years thought we’d be here,” Ashanti told ET. “Ten years ago, maybe, but after we broke up, I thought we’d never speak to each other again.” But things worked out. Ashanti told ET that she wants a beachside wedding. “I think it’ll be a combination of fashion, glitz and Caribbean vibes. I want beach, ocean, sun, palm trees, stuff like that,” she said of how she envisions her big day.
Despite rumors swirling that the couple was expecting a baby, Ashanti revealed to ET that neither she nor her partner were aware of her pregnancy at the time, calling it just a coincidence.
“We actually didn’t know when he blurted it out on stage, and he wasn’t even tested at the time,” she reveals, explaining that her stomach wasn’t visible where her hand was, and she was simply trying to adjust a pendant on her black dress.

The singer shared the excitement and details of her engagement with Entertainment Tonight, which was announced in April along with the happy news that Ashanti was pregnant. She described the experience as “beautiful” and “intimate.”
“We weren’t even dressed up,” she said, adding that when he proposed, they were in bed watching TV in their pajamas and she was in one of his T-shirts and boxer shorts.
“I cried. I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever,” Ashanti said. “I FaceTimed everyone I know…I was so happy, shocked, surprised, happy, it all just came together.”
Ashanti and Nelly are overjoyed as they embark on the amazing journey of raising a child together. They couldn’t be happier with their new addition to their family. Ashanti is spreading the joy on social media and we are so happy for them!
