of lip suede matte lipstick The case is housed in a twist-up glossy tube with a magnetic closure. The packaging is beautiful, but the magnetic feature makes it difficult to store them side by side (same problem I have with baby blush). According to a survey I conducted, when people own multiple shades, most people store them alternately (one right side up, one upside down, etc.).
I think the packaging is beautiful (magnetic issues aside), but I’ve received dozens of messages saying the packaging is bulky and unattractive. I love the unique look, but I can see how many people find it too big. While the product-to-package ratio seems excessive, you can also see how it fits into the brand’s aesthetic.
Lip Suede Matte Lipstick Formula is a satin-like, lightweight, cushioned matte. I like that it’s a soft matte. Smooth and glides perfectly. I swipe it back and forth a few times to evenly cover the entire lips, but one swipe works great for me.
The formula is a classic lipstick. I don’t think it’s very moisturizing, but it’s not drying either. It has a very soft scent, almost vanilla-like, almost crayon-like, but you have to sniff it quite close to discern the scent. I don’t notice anything on my lips.
The staying power is okay. They stay in place unless you touch your lips with something, but they are not transfer-proof. Due to the matte texture, my lips start to look a little dry after a few hours.
Below are swatches of the five shades I chose.
- The lacquer is a light and calming peach color.
- Pique is a taupe rose
- Minx is a bright warm pink
- Je Reve is a beautiful mauve rose
- The roux is a cool chestnut brown

I have mixed feelings overall. I love the colors, except for the roux which looks like death. The formula is really good for matte, but I definitely prefer Pat McGrath, Lisa Eldridge, and Charlotte Tilbury for their matte lipstick formulas. At $50 each, I’m not sure if it’s worth the splurge. The gains seem incredibly steep. That being said, prices for everything seem to be rising to insane levels. I much prefer these mats to the Hourglass mat I reviewed a few weeks ago, but I don’t think I’d call this a must-have.
If you’re interested in these and love matte lipsticks, you might want to wait until a Sephora savings event when the price drops if you’re a beauty insider.
